The Mill Street Inn,
located in the heart of Newport's
Historic Hill neighborhood at 75 Mill
Street, is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. The Inn
sits on a foundation that dates to
1850. The original building, a large
woodworking shop, belonged to the
renowned Newport builder, J. D. Johnston.
In 1890, the building was destroyed by
fire and Johnston rebuilt it of brick
|
|
| The newly constructed mill was powered by a
steam boiler in the basement. All of the
machinery in the building was connected to this
power source by leather belts, which ran through
holes in the floors. The building was used for
millwork until 1980 when it was sold to the
Australian Russ Jennings. |
| |
| Johnston built many of
the mansions on Newport's fabled
Ocean Drive and Bellevue Avenue. He
worked with the most distinguished
architects of the time including
Frederick Law Olmstead, Mckim, Mead and
White and William Hunt. The Newport
Historical Society maintains a collection
of drawings and photographs of
Johnston's work, which were donated
by the Mill's owners. |

In 1984, the current
owners, Hugh Jones and Jeff Farrar
purchased the Mill from Jennings and
converted it into an all suite hotel. The
renovation earned the project an American
Institute of Architects Design Award for
restoration. |

| Many of the buildings
historical features remain, including
many old beams, the large front doors and
the cantilevered timber projecting from
the front of the building. Visit the
dining room of the Mill Street Inn to see
important photos of the Mill as an
operating facility. |
